Twinwall polypropylene sheet 1000x500mm
We supply unique Mugi specified 2mm polypropylene [PP] twinwall sheets ideal for model aircraft building. Please note that this material is now UK manufactured to our particular and exacting specifications! After sampling several different grades and flute dimensions we found the best combination of low weight and strength. We sell these sheets now in white only. For colouring see the section Colouring Materials. Sheets weigh about 362g each with full size sheets varying slightly with manufacturing tolerances. They can be recycled of course.
Normally we despatch them in packs by Royal Mail at Standard Parcel rate; usually they take a few days to arrive. The minimum pack size is a Tenpack comprising ten half sheets (each a nominal 1000 x 500 x2mm) with flutes lengthwise. They are wrapped in a stapled and taped black twinwall folder to withstand the rigours of our postal system-See the photo above.
The Mugi Evo model in particular becomes addictive. So this the time to visit the Mugi Shop. There is end space in the twinwall packs for particularly large and awkward items/shapes such as Scotch 550 transparent building tape, motors, controllers, servos, the 25mm wide tapes, Evo-Stik adhesive etc. Along the pack folded side is room for (awkward to post) metre long carbon tubes and rods, control snakes; piano wire etc. All the smaller items such as wheels, horns and hardware, decals sheets, can also be shoe-horned into the package. The popular Tenpack weighs 2.6Kg usually; it slots into the weight category up to 4Kg meaning that this is a golden apportunity to acquire those additional weighty items in the package, effectively postage paid. Coloured tapes have proven too awkward and time consuming to incorporate in the pack, being 50mm wide. We send them separately. However the 25mm tapes will fit and still allow stapling of the pack. Consider additional twinwall sheets-economical, at least up to an eighteen pack. Any special requirements - for example flute direction Advice? Easy, please just enquire by email to: g4led@mugi.co.uk or telephone us at home, at any reasonable time. Enquiries from colleges, schools etc, have all been entertained. Please ask for Mugi (pronounced moooGi) and ask for Adrian or Yvette. If you want a sample then send an SAE to us, we will pop in a white offcut (usually with a splodge of coloured tape applied). Black samples if you specifically ask for them. Single (or several) metre square sheets are available to all callers. As a guide they even fit in a Nissan Micra and other perhaps narrower vehicles, by bowing them gently over the rear seats. A fiddly but damage free exercise.
Please be aware that we use the thicker 2.5mm black twinwall for:
Packaging
Each pack of our 2mm twinwall sheets is securely wrapped in a folded piece of the 1200x1200mm heavy duty black twinwall. This not only lends good integrity to the package but also gives you extra twinwall material to play with! After all - it wouldn't make sense to package our sheets any other way. Note that nowadays the Royal Mail will not carry larger than a 'half sheet' package size ie: 1200x600x50mm. Full size sheets have been despatched by carrier at extra cost but usually numerous Mugi supporters have actually called here to Holmfirth. Make a trip of it. We do, fortunately, have the driveway room to turn around the average car, 4x4, small van, camper, even caravan and pantechnicon. Just drive a short way down the sloping, shared private cul-de-sac off New Mill Road. At the bottom is a tight left bend, drive a few more metres, on your right side is a pair of large timber dark brown gates; park temporarily a little beyond. Disembark, open the larger gate and it will automatically post latch, then open the smaller gate by lifting the bolt and drop onto the grass area. REVERSE close to the kerbing, over the black heavy duty drainage channel into our tarmacadam drive, clearing the gate swing-Mind our blue Citroen if it is there! Please then close the smaller gate and drop the bolt into the channel hole. Close the larger gate if there is room-keeps strange dogs and cats out.
These twinwall sheets are big but well worth the trip, especially as a club/group bulk purchase. Do the scenic Holmfirth town first where several happy hours easily go by, even if it is raining!*. Bookshop, mill store, tourist trivia, good supermarket, ginnels, passageways, steps, A couple of excellent fish & chip shops, Summer Wine attractions etc. Pass by us later on. We are only a mile up the A635 New Mill Road (signed Wakefield). Please telephone us first though before making the whole trip. Farthest caller here? Excepting Australia (air and bus) it is Norway-two happy modellers, loads of twinwall, sundry bits and pieces and two squashed wives in the car off to the Hull ferry!
*Before setting off search for 'Holme Valley Weather' on the internet. Study our home weather station parameters and skycam on http://www.mugi.co.uk/g4led/ running night and day. If using a map to find us then the OS national grid reference is SE153094 and for those with SatNav then the postcode of HD9 7RU will bring you here, theoretically. On Google Earth type in G4LED and by helicopter see the notes under 'Station Info' in the APRS window. We are Longitude 01.46.13W and Latitude 53.34.52N
The "Smallprint" - Please read this!
Please note that although we 'jig' cut all 2mm twinwall sheets down to1000x500mm, these dimensions are nominal and may vary slightly from sheet to sheet.
Also, the flute dimensions and appearance may vary slightly across a sheet and between sheets. This is a result of the manufacturing process, the sheets are heated and then cooled. Subsequently over the following couple of weeks they stabilize and stiffen a little. Always examine your sheets carefully, all over. Look for tiny pinpricks or creaseing; hold up to the light. Some marks are inevitble as the material charges through the mechanical mould machines. Our original material had flutes were often close together at one side of a sheet and wider at the other. The 'close' side was more rigid; ideal for elevons. We used to chop off this 40mm wide elevon strip first. These narrower flutes often accommodated our 1.5mm carbon fibre rod. Whatever you do, don't rely on 'number of flutes' as a measurement! The modern twinwall, made in the UK from November 2008, is much more consistent in flute spacing, average density and a good white colour.
Flute Orientation
Ordinarily we supply the twinwall sheets with the fluting running lengthways. This is the most useful and economical direction for model building purposes. However should you require some of the sheets with the flutes in the short direction then please note clearly in the Additional Information section of Delivery and Contents Page. You can find this in the Checkout section towards the end of your shopping expedition.
'Colours'
The photo above shows our current sheet range lying on a piece of printed paper. This illustrates the opacity of the various 'colours' available. The black (packing) sheet is foremost, then the opaque white sheet, followed by an original translucent sample. Please note that 2mm coloured twinwall is not available. Early experiments did use colour tinted twinwall. However the quality varied hugely depending on the pigments used and their density. Wishy-washy colours were apparent especially against a bright sky background. Altogether very unsatisfactory. Paints, dyes, emulsions, car aerosols etc. and inks would not 'take' to the polypropylene. We finally found the solution for colouring polypropylene sheets. We solely recommend using the densely coloured, self-adhesive, flexible, thin polypropylene tapes that we stock. Vinyl tapes are available but have an extra weight penalty.
Storage and Disposal
We recommend storing the polypropylene material flat, if possible, in a cool dry location with the flute directions alternating. Under a bed is ideal. We do store some 'in use' sheets vertically but move them around to prevent slight the inevitable slight curving. Keep all twinwall out of direct sunlight-a good reason to store your finished Mugi Evo in an Evo Hangar Box.
When you finally discard the twinwall please use your "green" bin; polypropylene [ PP ] can be fully recycled.
*Lastly before going to the ordering and checkout section please consider purchasing a carbon fibre wing spar. The 6x4mm tubing and the 4x2mm tubing perfectly telescope together; they can travel to you taped in the Twinwall Pack spine, stay straight and go within the postage rate charged. The most effective way to obtain these awkwardly lengthy but absolutely essential components. A metre tube gives a pair of Evo spars. Extend with the narrower tubing to entertain high aspect ratio wing designs.Visit the Carbon Tube section before proceeding to the Ordering and Checkout pages. Talking of extended wings; the latest site addition by Morgan is in the Tutorials Section detailing this procedure.
