Carbon Fibre Rod
Round, black carbon fibre rod in 1000mm lengths is available posted securely, in three separate ways now:
- Firstly - in straight metre lengths; inside a triangular 'Toblerone' shaped package of our black twinwall. Dimensions may vary depending on contents. The triangular shape is there for strength. It is finally seam stapled and taped. (sent Standard Parcel rate UK only) Please open at the white band end. Leave the other end taped up if you want to store the carbon, standing in a wardrobe or similar. Lengths of carbon tubing, piano/music wire and our control snakes can also be easily included this way. Propellers, clevises, horns and other narrow items will also fit. Email us first if unsure about fitting wider items.
- Secondly - in a 'Wallet' a maximum of 600x400x8mm black twinwall wrapping, the carbon rod bowed to fit inside. Rectangular package has stapled and taped edge seams. Suitable only for the bendier of our current metre length carbon rods up to 2mm diameter. These lengths of 2mm diameter rod will just tolerate this radius of bending but should be unpacked immediately on receipt, to prevent end strands splitting away from the body. Several will fit into the wallet space, in parallel together, the thickness increasing with numbers. Above 2mm diameter the straight 'Toblerone' is mandatory. Our thinnest 1mm rod will actually circle inside reduced size wallets. Smaller wallets reduce the liklihood of postal bending. Wallets travel Packet rate in the UK, smaller wallets may even go Large Letter. Package thickness has then to be <25mm overall so only thin extras can be included eg:electric propellors, prop-savers etc. Wallets can be posted International rate but the package size has to be adjusted here, as necessary, to meet the 90cm requirement total of: length x width x thickness. It is similarly taped and stapled for security of course.
- Thirdly - rods < 2mm diameter can be easily sent with Evo orders. The metre length rod is sprung into position in a 'U' shape, often taped into the square box lid. Therefore care is needed when unwrapping. Similarly they 'U' fit in the Scramjet box and also along the spine of a twinwall pack. Just indicate in the info box on the order form. No extra postage is charged with this piggyback arrangement.

Cutting carbon fibre rod - To cut the carbon rod up to 2mm diameter, roll it under a sharp blade all the way around the circumference. Hold each side between thumb and forefingers, with both your thumb nails abutting under the knife cut, gradually levering the joint open until the rod snaps. For larger sizes and tubing, saw all the way around using a coping saw or junior hacksaw blade, continuing until parted. For accuracy use an old trick - wrap an envelope edge around your carbon and use it as a ruler for a pencil line; saw around on this newly marked line. Your ends will meet cleanly.
Kite fliers and wing builders please note these rods will sometimes fit inside the similar (id) sizes tubes we stock. The fit is often very tight and is eased by light sanding. Form a lightly swaged tube mouth and add a collar to prevent the tube end splitting. The combination of tubing and rod allows for useful joins. Araldite smeared in one inserted side permits permanent fixing, the other half a sliding, field assembly. To date the 10mm and 6mm rods size have been mated successfully in respective id tubing and are a secure, snug fit.
Rod weights are nominal as the table rounds down the decimal gram weight.
Composition - the carbon fibre comprises 90% pultruded strands of carbon and 10% resin content.
