Tea Racer Dihedral Brace

A spring steel hard drawn round wire dihedral centre wingspan brace for a 'sports' look. 100mm~ 4" long and already centre bent to give around 10mm dihedral on each wing panel to the 820mm total span. Ends ground and smoothed to fit into our 6 x 4mm carbon fibre wing tubes. Weighs 10g

It  is supplied lightly oiled to inhibit corrosion, heat sealed in a scrap plastic sleeve, so remove carefully. Degrease it completely and scratch with a coarse sandpaper to help the adhesive (Araldite) get a good grip in due course. Now do a dry, dummy run, to check for a good fit and adequate dihedral angle. Trim the twinwall material at respective wing centres so they butt together, including the wing joiner tongue. Take off small slivers until satisfied. Finally clean the dowel again, this time with a little lighter fuel to remove finger grease.

Gently weight one wing panel down on a flat surface. Araldite glue the wire brace into it's carbon fibre tube aligning the centre mark and ensure dowel is rotated to maximum height*, square on to the carbon spar; if it helps, slide on the other, loose wing panel raising wingtip about 20mmm up and prop temporarily while the glue sets overnight. Fix on this raised wing permanently, sliding onto the projecting dowel with some glue on the wire, into the receiving hole, also adding glue to the centre butt joints. Align both wing panels with the same incidence; pin or weight the LE and TE. Add the central tongue wrap, trimming as necessary to fit.

*Here at Mugi we like to cater for all tastes where possible. If you prefer a different but subtle dihedral angle alteration from that designed then read on...

Pencil mark the wire dihedral brace centre, hold one half  in a substantial bench vice (with soft alloy lined) jaws. Place a thick steel flat plate/chisel/bar along the wire and hard up against the jaws. Firmly tap with a weighty (lump) hammer to increase/decrease the angle. A couple of taps is all that will be required. The plate/chisel/bar is vital to impart the centre angle bend without curving the actual rod length. Increased angle makes the centre wrap harder to engineer/will start to curve the brace, stressing the carbon fibre tubing/flight pattern may become too groovy. Less angle still keeps the right look without the optical illusion of  'anhedral' that actually isn't there. You pays your money...

**Now available is the brace itself without any bend at all. Just straight but with the ends ground to a minor chamfer for ease of inserting. 100mm of rock hard piano wire, already cut. **Please specify on the order form under the top section Additional Information **

Donations of carbon steel 12" hacksaw blades at 24 teeth spacing for 'hard materials' will be gratefully acepted! This wire is murder to chop up....
